Should Not Belong To You

February 12, 2019

This song is in response to the work I do concerning a boy in child labor, who featured in Beneath the Barcode, a photography exhibit I curated with Media Voices for Children, January 2018.

Early rise, late night fall

Should not belong to you

The toil of hands, blood and earth

Should not belong to you.

The rake, the shears, the quiet tears

Should not belong to you

Mother’s arms, a memory

They now belong to you.

The aches, the pains, the blacks and blues

Should not belong to you

A shackled soul on one so young

Should not belong to you.

Eyes they burned once so bright

The flame now almost dim

He does not see the sun or stars

This world t’is gone from him.
